Hello World: Java

In this guide, I’ll show you how to setup Java, setup a Java IDE, and write your first program.


First thing’s first: you need Java SE Development Kit. OSX install instructions:

  1. Download and install the latest Java Developer Kit (JDK). As of this writing, JDK 8u112 is the latest.
  2. Download Eclipse Neon.
  3. Run the Eclipse Installer and select Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers.
  4. Complete the installation and Launch Eclipse.
  5. Select a workspace and Create a new Java EE Web Project.

  6. Set the project name.
  7. Create a new class.

Hello World!

  1. You’re finally ready for your first Java program: Hello World! Copy the following code into your Java file and click the Run button.
  2. public class HelloWorld {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            System.out.println("Hello, World");
